enough

Have you ever felt like you aren’t good enough? Aren’t capable of doing something? Not ____ enough (fill in the blank). I know I have. At times, my problems have felt too big for me to handle. What’s great about that, is that we weren’t meant to handle our problems alone. Even when I’m not enough, God is. He always has been and always will be.

How powerful is that? God is enough. Hard truth coming: we aren’t enough. On our own, we aren’t enough. God created us to depend on him and what an honor it is. Isaiah 64:6 says “We have all become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous deeds are like a polluted garment. We all fade like a leaf, and our iniquities, like the wind take us away.” Even our best attempts are like filthy rags. We can’t do anything of value without Christ. What an honor it is to be able to partner beside Him.

Now that might sound horrible, but it’s actually a relief! It’s not our job to be perfect, it’s not a standard that God has placed on us. We don’t have to try to be enough because God’s got us covered. That’s His job. We are vessels for His use, not the answer to people's problems.

“The Lord upholds all who fall

and lifts up all who are bowed down.”

Psalms 145:14

God upholds us when we fall. He uses our mistakes and failures to teach us more about Him, to show His mercy, and to encourage others as they feel unable to measure up. If you look at the bible, no one was enough by worldly standards. Moses wasn't a good enough speaker. Gideon wasn’t a good enough soldier. Eve wasn’t good enough of a wife or mother. This is purposeful. If they were, we would likely be tempted to look at them instead of looking at the cross.

There is beauty in our deficits because that’s where God shines through. It’s where we can really press in and lean into God and who he is. To rely on God is a beautiful thing. To understand that we are nothing without God and to rely completely on him is the sweetest, most powerful thing we can do. It is where our own abilities and efforts end that God can truly shine through us in a way that impacts those around us!!
