his mercy is more

This week I wanna talk about something that has been on my heart heavily. It amazes me just how much the father loves us. We are humans. We are sinners. We make mistakes constantly. Yet, we have the honor of serving a God who loves us and pours his mercy out on us more than our sins. Acknowledging the reality of sin in our lives can be an uncomfortable truth, but it’s one that lies at the heart of our faith journey. We recognize that we fall short of God's perfect standard and that our actions, thoughts, and words often steer us away from His will. I get it, that that can make it easy to feel overwhelmed, burdened, and even hopeless. But the beauty of it lies in the profound truth that God's mercy surpasses our sins in magnitude and power!! WOW!

Scripture is a great place to go (for anything really but…) to look at how God’s mercy covers our sins. It speaks volumes about the enormity of our sins and the incomprehensible depth of God's mercy. Romans 3:23-24 says:

"for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus."

What a beautiful reminder that sin is a universal reality; no one is exempt from its grasp. YET despite our failings, God offers us justification through His grace, made possible by the sacrifice of Jesus Christ.

Isaiah 64:6 further emphasizes this:

"All of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags; we all shrivel up like a leaf, and like the wind our sins sweep us away."

This imagery illustrates the gravity of our sinfulness. Even our most righteous deeds are tainted by sin in the eyes of a holy God. Left to our own devices, we are powerless to overcome this sinful nature.

But we serve a God so mighty that even in the face of our utter unworthiness, His mercy shines as a beacon of hope and redemption. It’s so evident that God's mercy is not merely a passive attribute but an active force that breathes life into our spiritually dead selves. It is through God's mercy that we find salvation and restoration. Ever heard the phrase “love isn’t a noun, it’s a verb” (or something along those lines)? God is the ultimate example of what it means for love to be an action.

"But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved."

Ephesians 2:4-5

The story of the prodigal son beautifully illustrates the boundless nature of God's mercy. Despite wasting his inheritance in reckless living, the prodigal son finds himself welcomed back with open arms by his loving father. This story is a reminder that no matter how far we stray, God's mercy is always ready to embrace us when we humbly return to Him (Luke 15:11-32).

Another powerful scripture is Psalm 103:12:

"as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us."

We can discover reassurance in the promise that God's mercy extends beyond measure. Both you and I are going to fall short, we’re going to sin, we’re going to mess up, but the beauty of it is that even in our brokenness, God's mercy is infinitely greater.
